An anecdote tells that James Whale, the director of »Frankenstein«, spotted Boris Karloff in the studio canteen and told him he had "a face with possibilities..." Karloff had previously appeared in small roles in over 40 films. But it was the role in »Frankenstein« that brought him his big breakthrough. Makeup artist Jack P. Pierce created a monster makeup for the ages, James Whale created a cinematic masterpiece and Karloff became one of the greatest icons of cinema in his role as the monster.
