The 1987 film, RoboCop, takes place in a near future Detroit, Michigan that is riddled with crime and on the verge of a collapse. In a desperate move, the mayor of Detroit signs an agreement with Omni Consumer Products, or OCP, to revive the city and assist the underfunded police force. OCP’s senior president, Dick Jones, creates an enforcement droid, the ED-209, to help the police fight the growing crime rate and gang violence in the city but ED-209 malfunctions and kills a board member before the project could be approved. Instead, an experimental cyborg design is proposed by an
up-and-coming employee at OCP, Bob Morton, and the chairman of the board approves his concept. Now to find the right man.
After Officer Alex Murphy is gunned down by a mob boss in Detroit, Morton selects him for the RoboCop Program and replaces most of his body with cybernetics, creating the first RoboCop. RoboCop is programmed to Serve the Public, Protect the innocent and Uphold the law and begins to efficiently rid Detroit of crime and violence. Within the RoboCop suit, Murphy has very little memory of his past life, at first. As the memories resurface, Murphy remembers the gang leader that killed him and tracks him down. He learns from the gang leader that the senior president of OCP, Dick Jones, is plotting to take over OCP and run the company, as well as Detroit, like a military installment. Chaos ensues.
