During his visit to Afghanistan to introduce the Jericho missile, Tony Stark is ambushed and captured by terrorists calling themselves the Ten Rings. Grievously wounded with shrapnel lodged near his heart, Stark is temporarily saved by an electromagnet constructed by fellow prisoner, Dr. Yinsen. The leader of the Ten Rings later offers Stark his freedom if he (Stark) agrees to build a Jericho missile for the terrorist group.Stark and Yinsen secretly construct an arc reactor and begin to piece together the Mark I armor which will enable Stark’s escape. The terrorists finally discover the ruse as the Mark I is powering up, and Dr. Yinsen heroically sacrifices himself to buy sufficient time. Clad in the roughhewn, golem-like Mark I armor, Stark pulverizes the Ten Rings, finally pausing to exchange farewells with the dying Dr. Yinsen. Constructed from iron copper magnesium alloy cannibalized from Stark mortars, the bulletproof Mark I armor was equipped with thruster boots, a flamethrower, and a missile launcher.
