Moe Szyslak, a former boxer, is the owner and operator of the local drinking establishment, a place he inventively named Moe’s Tavern. Moe’s is a place where nobody knows your name, but everybody wants to borrow your money. It’s a place where you can feel at home, if you were raised in a holding tank for drunk drivers. A place where you can drown your sorrows in an overpriced, heady rush of cheap swill. But there’s more to Moe’s than alcohol. You can take your romantic temperature with the Love Tester machine, ride the mechanical bull, or witness the rattling fury of the washer/dryer drag races. Moe also runs some shady smuggling operations out of the back of the bar, trafficking mostly in exotic animals like pandas, killer whales, and wildebeests.
Moe is often described as surly, but he is a man of more than one dimension. He’s also rude, ungracious, sullen, irritable, ill-mannered, and snappish. Bart Simpson’s prank phone calls for Amanda Huggenkiss, Mary Mebarney, Ivana Tinkle, etc. do little to soothe his nerves. This hasn’t prevented him from developing a devoted group of regulars, led by Barney Gumble and Homer Simpson, with whom he’s always happy to pass the time, provided they’re buying the beer.
When not behind the bar, Moe is a snakehandler, teaches a class in Funk Dancing for Self-Defense, and reads stories to sick children in the hospital. He plays poker at Homer’s house, and is on a bowling team, the Pin Pals, with Otto, Apu, and Homer. His reptilian good looks, manly malty stench, and the fact that he still lives with his mother make him a hit with the ladies. They literally have to beat him off with sticks.
