The handgonne is the oldest handheld firearm in the world. As the ancestor of modern firearms, although the handgonne has the problem of slow loading speed and insufficient accuracy when shooting at a long distance, its penetrating power is quite powerful. They have proven their worth countless times on the battlefield. It took only a century for the handgonne to become an important weapon in Medieval European armies since it first appear in the 14th century. And in the next century they even began to replace the crossbow. Over the 150 years starting in the mid-14th century, this simple weapon fired by a slow-burning matchlock developed rapidly and giving rise to many varieties. Eventually it was replaced by the light matchlock arquebus in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.

Despite a variety of shortcomings in the handgonne, it still played a great role on the battlefield in the late Middle Ages. Since the advent of handgonne, mankind has for the first time used light weapons that use chemical energy and its significance far exceeds the impact of the handgonne on the battlefield. It can be said that handgonne is an epoch-making weapon that separates the cold weapon era and the hot weapon era.
