Anubis is the Egyptian name for the god of death, mummification, embalming, the afterlife, cemeteries, tombs, and the underworld. He is usually depicted in ancient Egyptian religion as a dog or a dog-headed man. Like many ancient Egyptian deities, Anubis took on different roles in different contexts. Depicted as a tomb protector as early as the First Dynasty (ca. 3100 - ca. 2890 BC), Anubis was also an embalmer. By the Middle Kingdom (ca. 2055 - 1650 BC), he was replaced in his role as ruler of the underworld by Osiris.
