22.09.2023 • PREPARE FOR CHECK-IN
The event series »The Continental: From the World of John Wick« starts today on Prime Video. The subtitle immediately makes it clear what we can expect. The three feature-length episodes are set in the 1970s and tell the story of how Winston Scott (Colin Woodell) took over the Continental.

The Continental is a hotel chain with branches all over the world. The hotels are neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld. They are frequented by many contract killers and notorious murderers and offer the best service, which is what a certain Mr. Cormac (Mel Gibson) vouches for with his good name…

The trailer looks damn good and promises us a lot of handmade action and breathtaking fight choreographies, as well as a cool 70's flair with a corresponding soundtrack. The evening is saved!

But before you want to book a city trip in the Continental on booking.com, take a look at the trailer first:

21.09.2023 • THEATRICAL RELEASES: EXPENDABLE OLD MEN AND A DEMONIC NUN
In 2010, Sylvester Stallone scored a coup with »The Expendables« by gathering the heroes of the 80s and 90s in one film and paying homage to the action cinema of those days. There were lots of one-liners and brutal over-the-top action. Like most successful films, »The Expendables« was followed by sequels.

The fourth part of the series is hitting cinemas today and most critics are not very enthusiastic. The film is often accused of false labeling, as the trailers placed their focus on Sly Stallone whereas his character Barney Ross only has 15 minutes of screen time in the film. The old action heroes are even older in 2023, and probably too old. Jason Statham as Lee Christmas is at the center of the story and delivers a one-man show. This no longer has much to do with the original concept of »The Expendables«. For us, »Expend4bles« is expendable in the cinema. The upcoming streaming evaluation is definitely enough for us.

With »The Conjuring« James Wan scored a real hit and revitalized the haunted house subgenre. This not only became a franchise but also an entire cinematic universe, which gave peripheral characters like the doll »Annabelle« three sequels. The demon Valak, aka »The Nun« was introduced in »The Conjuring 2« and is now getting a second film.

»The Nun« is considered one of the weakest movies in the series but is also the most successful film in the franchise. A second part was as certain as the Amen in church. The director was Michael Chaves, who was also responsible for the weak »The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It« and the lame »The Curse of La Llorona«, so expectations of the new nun are probably rather muted. However, many reviews of the film praise its camera work and atmosphere and most critics think it fares better than its predecessor, even if it is said to be predictable and therefore a fair amount of boring. Friends of jump-scare cinema will definitely get their money's worth here.

All in all, two films of summer slump-like mediocrity with a lack of originality. So maybe our time is better spent sitting in the sun and enjoying the last days of summer.
20.09.2023 • 60 YEARS OF »THE BIRDS«
Exactly 60 years ago today, Alfred Hitchcock's film »The Birds« was released in German cinemas. The film was received rather cautiously by critics, as the Master of Suspense was way ahead of its time by courageously refusing to give the audience an explanation for the bird attacks and simply leaving the interpretation up to us.

Regardless of whether we want to read it as an ecological thriller about an exploited nature taking revenge or the metaphor of an oedipal conflict, the film has long since become a great classic of cinema. There is hardly any animal horror film that was not influenced by »The Birds«. And probably in another 60 years, film students will still be studying the schoolyard scene in amazement at how the master creates tension and teaches us a lesson in pure cinema. So if you have never seen »The Birds« we strongly recommend that you close this cinematic education gap.
19.09.2023 • SEPARATE WAYS
For many gamers and especially horror fans, the remake of »Resident Evil 4« might be one of the best game titles of 2023. Capcom delivered a prime example of how to transport a classic into the present without destroying the substance of the original.

Besides the likeable characters Leon and Ashley, there is one character that players undoubtedly remembered: We're talking about Ada Wong, of course, whose short appearances enjoy true cult status among fans. In the main game, Ada's motivation remains relatively nebulous and you have to consult secondary sources to fully understand the reason for her stay.

In the first DLC »Separate Ways«, you can experience the events surrounding Los Illuminados from Ada's perspective. There's no need to explain to genre and series veterans that her experiences are not for the faint-hearted.

If you want to get a first impression, you should check out the launch trailer:
https://youtu.be/nHCK6Cbn3UM

The »Separate Ways« DLC will be released September 21st for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S and will cost ¤9.99. The main game is required to play.

By the way, you can still pre-order Ada Wong in 1/6 format from DAMTOYS from us:

18.09.2023 • AQUAMAN 2
End of last week, Warner Bros. finally dropped the long-awaited trailer for the Aquaman sequel »Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom«:
https://youtu.be/FV3bqvOHRQo

Of course we are looking forward to see Jason Momoa again. But apart from that, the trailer somehow doesn't work for us. The gags aren't really funny and just make us smile tiredly. It surely has its epic moments, but the CGI bombast puts us off a bit. And as a movie at the edge between the old Snyderverse and the James Gunn-style DC restructuring, the film may also have difficulties finding its place. But let's wait and see ...

The theatrical release date is confirmed for December 21st. What are your thoughts on the first trailer on the next DC blockbuster?

11.09.2023 • »SAFETY LAST!« - THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY
When we think of the silent film era, some of us might first think of the works of German Expressionism, films like »Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari« or »Nosferatu«. Some might think of the great Universal melodramas like »The Hunchback of Notre Dame« or »The Phantom of the Opera« that paved the way for the Universal Monsters, but most of us will remember the comedians of that era. Above all probably Charlie Chaplin closely followed by Buster Keaton and the third star of that time’s top three - Harold Lloyd.

Lloyd initially sailed in Chaplin's slipstream with his character "Lonesome Luke" with rather moderate success and was considered one of the many Chaplin epigones employed by almost every studio. Only with the invention of his everyman with horn-rimmed glasses and often with a straw boater hat, always underestimated but clever and agile, did he achieve his breakthrough.

His greatest success was »Safety Last!«. The 1923 film celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and is still fascinating today. The image of Harold Lloyd hanging from the hands of a clock at a dizzying height above the urban canyons of New York has burned itself into our collective cinematographic memory like no other.

Incidentally, Infinite Statue & Collectibles once immortalized this film-historical moment in a beautiful statue (https://www.space-figuren.de/Archiv/Harold-Lloyd-Old-Rare-Statue-Safety-Last::14873.html). Of course it's been sold out for a long time, but we would like to see such statues more often. Long live the cinema!
08.09.2023 • ON THE ROAD TO TOYPLOSION
For the first time ever, Toyplosion took place in the Europahalle Castrop-Rauxel on August 26th. We were super happy to be able to be at the Retro Toyshow as an exhibitor after a long break from trade fairs.

Not only were we able to admire cosplayers and marvel at the treasures at the many stands, but above all we also had the opportunity to get to know many of you personally. At this point we would like to thank all the customers who visited us at Toyplosion! We were very happy to see you 😄!

Those who missed this great event should not go completely empty-handed. We captured the most interesting pictures on camera for you and spared no expense or effort 😉. In the latest episode of our “On the Road” format, we take you through the hall, show you the most exciting collectibles that were on display, interview exhibitors and organizers and share our own impressions with you.

06.09.2023 • THE MARSH KING'S DAUGHTER
We have a little tip for fans of psychological thrillers:

Based on the extremely successful book of the same name by Karen Dionne, »The Marsh King's Daughter« is brought to us by Lionsgate. The film tells the story of Helena, who grew up with her father in the middle of a marsh in the wilderness - until she found out that he had kidnapped her mother. After his arrest, she tries to put the past behind her and lead a normal life with a family of her own. But then her father breaks out of prison and Helena is sure that he is looking for her...

You can get a small foretaste of the gloomy mood and the intense acting of leading actress Daisy Ridley in the trailer:
https://youtu.be/FDnUVhLMqI0?si=-L3viN-iWDtMEQE0

We think that looks really promising! Unfortunately, it is not yet known when the film will be released in Germany. In the USA it will hit cinemas on October 6th. In any case, we hope that we too will be able to experience »The Marsh King's Daughter« on the big screen.
05.09.2023 • GODZILLA MINUS ONE
The fascination with one of the most famous monsters in film history just doesn't end - Godzilla! A new trailer for »Godzilla Minus One«, another adaptation of the "King of the Monsters", suddenly appeared yesterday:
https://youtu.be/r7DqccP1Q_4?si=ksmfG9nvWxOjSaco

This time the movie does not come from the blockbuster manufacturer Warner, but from Toho Studios, who released the first Godzilla film to cinemas in 1954 and are responsible for the original film series about the giant lizard. The well-known Japanese filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki is behind the script, direction and even the VFX.

We were really impressed with the look and the atmosphere of destruction and horror this trailer set up and left us wanting more. »Godzilla Minus One« will hit theaters in Japan and North America later this year. Unfortunately, no start date is known for Germany yet, but we hope that Godzilla will still find its way to us. We don't want to miss the spectacle, because if the Japanese don't know how to do Godzilla right, who does?
04.09.2023 • 100 YEARS OF »THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME«
It's time to celebrate another big anniversary. On September 2, »The Hunchback of Notre Dame« premiered in New York City. The film adaptation of Victor Hugo’s drama was a major prestige project at Universal, produced by Irving Thalberg and directed by Wallace Worsley.

Lon Chaney played a significant part in the great success of the film with his portrayal of the tormented hunchback and, last but not least, with the elaborate make-up he developed himself. Lon Chaney became the greatest character actor of the silent film era. Some of his masquerades, like that of the Hunchback Quasimodo or his role as Phantom of the Opera must have been a real ordeal, but this great adaptability and his acting skills secured him a place in the pantheon of cinema legends and the honorary title of "The Man with a 1000 Faces".

Happy birthday, dear Quasimodo!
01.09.2023 • PRODUCT OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2023
When HOT TOYS announced their Ahsoka Tano (based on the 2nd season of »The Mandalorian«) back in April 2021, did they really plan the arrival of the figure right on time for the launch of the »Ahsoka« series on Disney+? Probably not - but we think that this is the perfect timing to make the brand-new 1/6 Scale Ahsoka Tano & Grogu Set our product of the month in September 2023!

After her furious live-action debut in the 13th Mando chapter, it was just a matter of time until »The Jedi« would also be released by Hot Toys in the famous sixth scale. Yoda always used to remind us: "Patience you must have!". Okay: patience we had, actually for two and a half years ;). Now the wait is finally over and we will soon get in this wonderful Deluxe Set with Ahsoka, Grogu and all the bonus accessories and ship them out to you.

You did not pre-order yours yet? No problem - we do have some pieces left over still. So: It's now or never!
31.08.2023 • DRACULA: THE MOVIES & THE COLLECTIBLES
The time has come! Our second S.P.A.C.E SPECIAL is finally online and it turned out to be a real chunk. Because this time we're not just dealing with a single film but have combed through 100 years of film history to track down the most famous vampire of all time. His Excellency Count Dracula is being honored!

Our path leads us from Bram Stoker's novel to the first unlicensed film »Nosferatu« with Max Schreck, to Bela Lugosi and the golden age of Universal horror films, to the time when horror became colourful - especially red... blood red - in the most beautiful Technicolor of Hammer films with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing up to the present of today's streaming series. We encounter exotic things like a Turkish Dracula, various TV incarnations and meet the opulent blockbuster by Francis Ford Coppola with Gary Oldman in the title role.

El Jefe Sven and Mick, our in-house film dictionary on two legs, chat about the films and their encounters with them, how they were made, interesting facts and anecdotes and of course various fun facts.

In the second sector, Tobias gives you an overview of where Dracula was let loose on us collectors in various formats and incarnations and sank his teeth deep into our necks - and sometimes wallets.

We hope you enjoy our S.P.A.C.E SPECIAL on DRACULA and are looking forward to your comments. We bid you welcome!

31.08.2023 • WEEKEND OF HELL
No matter the name, whether it’s »Weekend of Horrors«, »Weekend of Hell« or »House of Horrors« - and no matter who organizes one of these horror conventions - most visitors can agree on one thing: The Turbinenhalle in Oberhausen as the venue for a Horror-Con fits like a butcher's knife into the slasher's hand!

The »Weekend of Hell« is finally returning to our favorite crime scene on September 2nd and 3rd after a forced break due to Corona, events in the Westfalenhalle and guest performances in a Neuss hotel!

As a die-hard horror fan, our Mick will be making a pilgrimage to Oberhausen on Saturday and is looking forward to creepy cosplayers, meeting many of the usual suspects from the scene, panels with the stars and creators of classics like »Friday the 13th«, especially Sean S. Cunningham, to Alyssa Sutherland from »Evil Dead Rise«, as a big Giallo fan to Barbara Bouchet, to good conversations, a hunt for media books and a beer or two with friends.

Oh, and how perfect would our long awaited and yet to be released DRACULA SPECIAL fit the WOH thematically?! Speaking of release: Stay tuned...

Which one of you will be at the WOH in Oberhausen?
30.08.2023 • ONE PIECE
Tomorrow, the live-action series »One Piece« starts streaming on Netflix.

Live-action adaptations of successful animes are always tricky. Does it succeed in picking up the fans of the original and in interesting new viewers who previously had no contact with it? Netflix's »Cowboy Bebop« recently failed at this task, but that didn’t discourage the streaming giant, who is now bringing us the Straw Hat Pirates. The reactions to the trailer were rather subdued. Many critics predict the same fate for the series as the aforementioned predecessor and expect the series to end after the first season.

We too remain skeptical, as the trailers seem strangely sterile to us. Of course, we are willing to change our minds, even if, to be honest, more than 1000 episodes of the anime series are quite enough for us for a few years, while enjoying the many collectibles from the series as well:

What about you? Are you looking forward to the series?
29.08.2023 • WACO
Since the middle of last week, Paramount+ has been streaming the six-part miniseries »Waco«. This is the first time that the series from 2018 will be shown in Germany.

The self-proclaimed prophet of the Branch Davidians sect, David Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) and his followers are under siege by the FBI and ATF for almost two months in 1993. The mission ends in disaster. A last attack and devastating fire leaves four federal officials and 82 cult casualties, including Koresh himself and 28 children.

The series has an impressive cast alongside Taylor Kitsch, including John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough, Rory Culkin, Julia Garner, Melissa Benoist and Paul Sparks. Michael Shannon stars as FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

Even if the events are well known, the series is captivating and exciting and scores very well on IMDb with a score of 7.9. Our Mick, who watched the first two episodes last night, agrees with the positive rating and is looking forward to the last four episodes.

Here is the original trailer from 2018:
